Brough Superior SS80

1936

ORIGIN: Nottingham

DATES: 1922 – 1940

This is the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles, a high-performance, supreme-quality bike with a price tag to match – when it was built in 1936, this bike cost £100, equivalent to about half a year’s salary. For this money, though, you could be sure of having the very best. Each Brough Superior was tested rigorously before despatch and its performance was personally certified by company boss George Brough. Accordingly, SS80s (the SS stood for ‘Super Sports’)were guaranteed to reach 80mph. What’s more, to ensure unrivalled build quality, each Brough Superior was built twice. The first assembly was to make sure all components fitted together perfectly; the bike then had to be dismantled again so everything could be painted or plated.
